My name is Selome (she/her). I’m a writer, editor & sitcom lover from deep in the heart of Texas.

I’m currently based in Los Angeles and work as a reporter at Variety.

Right now, I’m a reporter covering the TV business at Variety Magazine. But in an alternate universe somewhere, you might find me as a full-time greeting card artist or audiobook narrator.

I write about the ways art and pop culture touch our daily lives. I’ve developed a knack for writing about film, television, and music — especially in regards to race, gender and culture. You can read my work in Variety, the Austin Chronicle, Letterboxd and Okayplayer.

The Austin Chronicle

Austin’s alt-weekly. First as an editorial intern, and then as a freelance critic, I wrote stories across my hometown paper’s different sections with a special focus on film criticism.

Afterglow ATX

UT Austin’s first and only music publication, which I co-created and edited. Afterglow promises an immersive, unpretentious look at music in Austin and everywhere else, so look no further for stellar album reviews, concert photography, zodiac playlists, and more.

I travel whenever I can, especially to work on writing. Some highlights have included a four-week MFA-style writing intensive at NYU and a three-month study abroad program in Cape Town, where I studied South African literature & media. I’ve been bundled up at home during the COVID-19 pandemic, but have loved the opportunity to “attend” and cover virtual film festivals all over: Sundance, South by Southwest, Tribeca and more.

More than anything, I want to start good conversations about good art. Tell me about your favorite show from childhood and whether you’d watch it now. Keep an eye on my published work to see how the conversation moves.
